very good mattress August 26, 2010 Richard L. Fuehrer (Idaho) My wife and I pack with llamas. We're around 60 and a thin pad leaves us too stiff in the morning so we decided to give this thing a try. Since the critters carry the load, a little extra weight is ok. Before we bought it, I emailed Aerobed to ask how many inflations we can expect from a fully charged pump. They said 7 to 8. I charged the pump and kept filling and dumping it until the pump ran down. I got 7 easily. The 8th was really dragging down the pump and it left the mattress a little softer than we like. The pump is VERY fast, too. It takes 1 min 20 sec to get it to the firmness that we like, which is pretty firm. The valve allows it to be used with several alternate types of pumps and on an extended back country trip, I would recommend taking a backup of some kind, just in case.
I see a lot of air bed reviews that say the thing leaks and is half flat by morning. Most of those don't take into account that these are AIR beds. Air contracts when it cools. If you fill it tight on a warm evening, by the time it cools at 3AM, the air will have contracted considerably. You need to fill it when it's cool or plan on topping it off after it cools down in the night. It's the way air is so you'll have to live with it.
In all fairness, the 1st one we got did lose about 1/2 it's air in 4 hrs. Amazon had a replacement one on the way the same day that I requested an exchange. They also gave me a call tag to print out to cover the return shipping. This one works perfectly. I sure can't fault Amazon's service.
It's not our Sleep Number bed from home, but it's very satisfactory sleeping compared to a 2" self inflating pad like we've been using.
Any airbed is cold on cool nights. We use a couple thin ensolite pads under the sleeping bags and we stay plenty warm.
Most mattresses take forever to deflate and are very hard to get the air out to put them in a bag or roll up. This thing has a huge air release valve. If you're on it when you pop the valve, you're going down fast enough to get bruised when you hit the ground. I've never see a mattress that will dump the air as fast as this one.
Be aware of the warranty November 20, 2009 Q. Zhao (Great Falls, VA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased two of these and used them a few times. They are easy to pack and easy to setup. We loved having them. Then one of them started to leak. I thought it would be covered by the two year warranty. Unfortunately, I found that the two year warranty is for the pump only. I think that is very deceptive for such a big company to do this. There is nowhere in print that states the warranty is for pump only. But the customer service rep said that is the way their warranty works. Some box even say three year warranty. That is for the pump also. All aerobeds are warrantied for one year only. I thought Aero is the best name for inflatable beds, no any more.
Bad, bad, bad October 17, 2009 Plain truth (Chattanooga, TN United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
After the first charge, the pump charger did not work so I had to buy one from Radio Shack. The pump battery does not hold a charge very well although I did an initial 24 hour charge. After a few uses, the bed pumps up quickly but by morning is deflated and you're sleeping (or not) on the floor. Would not buy again, would not recommend.
Served me well for more than 3 years... September 28, 2009 Nastassia Sieger 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I used the queen size Aerobed sport to replace the standard issue twin beds when I was at college. It lasted 2 years of near daily use during the school year. (It even survived some rowdy friends lol) I also used it on occasion with no problems after I graduated. Near the 4th year of my ownership, it developed a slight leak but would still last overnight. I am not sure how much longer it would have lasted as it's life was cut short by a burning ember during camping. Oops. This Aerobed lasted longer than any others I have owned and I plan on replacing it with the same model soon.
Promising but turns out leaky and not-sturdy September 16, 2009 Omar Siddique (Ellicott City, MD USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A promising bed, but it turns out to not hold pressure and be poorly structured.
I bought this bed for a car-camping trip, because of the queen size, the relatively light weight and the small, dual-power rechargeable pump.
The biggest problem is the bed slowly loses pressure. Inflate it fully; after a few hours, it's less firm. By the next day it's distinctly less-than-full. It doesn't seem to be a patchable leak-- I don't hear or see anything, and the bed seems fine when first inflated. I suspect the construction is just flawed.
The Aerobed doesn't inflate as fast as the manual claims, nor does the pump make the distinctive whine the manual promised to indicate the bed is fully inflated. Even fully inflated, I can sit on the bed and sink most of the way through. Putting all my weight on one knee reaches the ground underneath. And I'm an average size/weight male at 5'11" and 180lbs...
Between the pressure issue and the lack of internal structure, it's awkward to move around on the bed, or to reach for something nearby, or even sit up on it. If you plan to lie down sprawled out, and then roll off onto the ground to get up, it'll serve. But anything else is frustrating.
I returned mine, and won't be trying Aerobeds again if this is their premium product. A competing Simmons was a few bucks more and heavier, but much more comfortably structured and didn't lose pressure. Now if I could only find a rechargeable pump that fits the Simmons...
Other thoughts: I wish inflatable bed manufacturers would use some sort of standard valve so it was easier to pick the bed I want, and then select the type of pump that works best for my needs.
Despite the Aerobed's premium pricing, the quality and construction leave a lot to be desired. Not recommended.
